Dear Dad and Nola,
Well I'm as happy as could be. Eve is back with me again. It was such a surprise. The most wonderful I've ever had. She did say on my last visit that there was a chance of coming out on the 14th. I told her not to bank on it, but nevertheless I found I was building up a lot of hope.
With 9 days in hand I immediately began renovating the flat furiously. Then on Monday night I phoned the Anglican priest who has been visiting Eve and he told me there was no hope. I was terribly disappointed and of course doubly surprised when I got off the Highlands North bus on Tuesday evening - to find Eve waiting for me. She was given a train ticket to Jhb, then took a taxi home.
Phil just said 'Mom', ran straight to Eve, and happily accepted she was home - few questions asked. But only today would he leave her for any length of time. The twins have nearly accepted Eve completely - they were shy at first. The funniest thing is how my attempt to keep her in their mind has backfired! I put up lots of pictures of Eve and we kept telling them in her absence: "That's Mum." Now they are still a bit shy of Eve in the flesh, but point to any picture and say happily: "Mummy!"
Eve is looking extremely well. Her last six weeks at Pretoria were almost easy compared to the extreme harshness of Pietersburg. She is on parole, and must report to the Special Branch twice a week until July 14th, but we hope to fit in a 3 day visit to the game reserve soon - and then our coastal holiday.
Sorry I haven't written for some time. Many thanks for the parcel of sweets and toys from Petticoat Lane. It was a lovely thought. And of course the sweets were quickly "appreciated". It's lovely to have a copy of 'Struwel Peter' in the house. It has already warned Phil very definitely off playing with matches and fidgeting at table. But I think he's still a bit young - he's quite frightened of it.
